A Crisis in Nursing:
By the Numbers

Some disturbing trends from across the province.

On their own, each of these numbers is startling. Together, they paint an alarming picture of a health care system that is beyond broken.

These statistics were collected in consultation with Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) across Newfoundland & Labrador, in partnership between the Registered Nurses’ Union of Newfoundland and Labrador (RNU) and the Provincial Government in March of 2022, as well as further research by the union in August.

current vacant RN positions in Newfoundland and Labrador.

RNs intend to retire in the next two years.

Every day, hardworking RNs and NPs go into work not knowing when their shift will end. Imagine coming home after a 16-hour shift without a meal or a break – and then having to be back, rested, and ready to go just six hours later.

In the face of mandated overtime, unsafe patient loads, threats and acts of violence, they sacrifice countless birthdays, anniversaries, and irreplaceable moments with family and friends – all so they can be there for us when we need them.

When it comes to the state of nursing in our province, the fact of the matter is simple:

  • RNs and NPs across Newfoundland and Labrador are breaking under the pressures of a broken system.
  • We all deserve more from health care.
  • Fortunately, there’s something you can do about it.
